The Shifting Pulse of a Nation: Performative Nationalism vs. Quiet Patriotism

In the digital age, the landscape of national identity is undergoing a profound transformation. We find ourselves at crossroads where the loud, visible symbols of belonging often overshadows the silent foundational commitment to the country’s progress. To add to that, the global socio-political scenario is influencing how individuals express their love for the country. This shift is often characterised by the rise of what gen Zs name as ‘performative’ nationalism. With hints of public facing, often symbolic display of loyalty contrasted against a perceived decline in real patriotism, which is rooted in civic duty and quiet sacrifice.

Understanding the spectrum; Nationalism and Patriotism

While often used interchangeably, these concepts represent different emotional and ethical foundations. Performative nationalism is frequently external and often reactionary. From what we observe, it relies heavily on optics; i.e.- social media, hashtags, loud public assertions and often policing other’s ‘loyalties’. It thrives on creating an ‘us versus them’ narrative, where the symbol of the nation becomes more important than the welfare of its citizens. Whereas, real patriotism is an eternal, steady flame. It is the quiet love for one’s own country that manifests in following laws, paying taxes, respecting fellow citizens and contributing to the nation’s progress without the need of an audience. It is critical when necessary and supportive when required.

The Role of Indian Armed Forces: The Guardians of the Spirit

Amidst these shifting tides, the Indian Armed Forces remain the most consistent bastion of genuine patriotism. Their contribution to keeping this spirit alive is not merely about border security but about upholding core values of our nation. The Military operates on the principles of ‘Seva Paramo Dharma’ which translates to ‘Service is the Highest Duty’. This serves as a constant reminder to the civilian population that true love for the country involves tangible sacrifice. Whether it is disaster relief during floods or high-altitude vigil in Siachen, the Indian Armed Forces demonstrate patriotism through action rather than rhetoric. The Indian Armed Forces are perhaps the most successful example of a ‘miniature India’. Regardless of religion, caste or regional language, soldiers live and fight as one unit. This institutional culture actively counters the divisive tendencies often found in performative nationalism, promoting a unified identity based on shared goals.

Shaping the Future, The Path to Glory

As the definition of service evolves, the bridge between the civilian life and military excellence becomes crucial. Translating the raw energy of the youth into the ‘Path of Glory’ requires more than just intent; it requires guidance and a deep understanding of the military way of life. Institutions dedicated to defence training play a vital role in this transition. Although we see the presence of such institutions in the rest of India, there is a noticeable gap that needs to be filled in the Northeast. Albeit there is no lack of courage or love for the country amongst youth here, there is still a lack of education and awareness that puts them a step behind their counterparts when it comes to representation in the Indian Armed Forces. Abhigyan Academy, for instance, serves as a catalyst for this transformation. With its presence in Guwahati and Dibrugarh, it is quite literally doing godsend work of educating youngsters about life in uniforms, and all things encompassing the Military way of life- the perks, the respect, the power and the glory. By providing rigorous coaching and fostering a deep sense of cognizance and awareness, such academies help young aspirants look beyond the performance of nationalism. They guide students towards the authentic patriotism required to wear the uniform, ensuring that the next generation is equipped not just with tactical skills but with the unwavering integrity that the Indian Armed Forces demand.

The Way Forward

The challenge for modern India lies in reclaiming the depths of our patriotism from the shallows of performative displays. By looking at the Armed Forces as the Northern Star and supporting the educational institutions trying to bridge the gap by preparing our youth for service, the nation can ensure that its spirit remain both vibrant and meaningful.
